How To Treat Keratosis Pilaris (Chicken Skin)

How To Treat Keratosis Pilaris (Chicken Skin)

If you let your imagination run, the term keratosis pilaris could describe an arctic dinosaur or a distant star. But in reality, Keratosis Pilaris is a lot more simple than it sounds. Keratosis Pilaris, also known as chicken skin, is the harmless white bumps that can appear anywhere on the body. Granted, the fact that these bumps are harmless does not make them any less annoying.

Keep reading to find out the cause of Keratosis Pilaris and how to treat this skin condition effectively.

What Causes Keratosis Pilaris

Patches of Keratosis Pilaris form as a result of an excess buildup of keratin; keratin is a protein that is part of the skin and hair. Currently, it is unknown what causes this buildup in the first place. Nonetheless, the extra keratin clogs the pores and causes a bumpy rash to appear. KP is commonly found on the upper arms, thighs, chest, elbows, and the tush.

How To Treat and Prevent Keratosis Pilaris,

The best way to (naturally) treat KP involves: 1) removing the excess buildup of keratin; and 2) restoring the skin's natural moisture. At Bushbalm™ we’ve designed the perfect products to get rid of these pesky patches and get your skin back to being smooth, healthy and radiant.

Step 1: Exfoliate Your Skin

Since Keratosis Pilaris is caused by a buildup of keratin, exfoliation is the first step to taking care of this. Regular exfoliation will gently break down the keratin deposits and allow the pores to breathe again.

Our ultra-thin sugar based scrubs are gentle yet effective. This product will exfoliate away dead skin cells and small bumps, without drying out your skin. Each scrub is infused with nourishing oils to help rejuvenate and reveal healthier-looking skin. We recommend using the scrub 2-3 times a week in the shower - depending on how sensitive your skin is.

Step 2: Hydrate

Step 2 is essential for two reasons: 1) this will restore the skin's natural moisture after exfoliation; and 2) when the skin is consistently moisturized, the risk of the pores becoming clogged with keratin is reduced significantly.

When it comes to KP, we want to make sure that we invest in natural light weight formulas that will nourish the pores as opposed to clogging them. For this step you can choose from our Nude Oil, or Sweet Escape Oil. We recommend applying the oil to Keratosis Pilaris on a daily basis.

How Bushbalm™ Skincare Has Helped People With Keratosis Pilaris

So many Bushbalm™ customers write to us daily to leave reviews, and share routines that have worked with them to soothe and soften their KP. Here is an example of what worked for Alyssia.

Alyssia's Experience With KP and Bushbalm™ Skincare Products

"I suffer from Keratosis Pilaris and I have super dry sensitive skin especially on my body. I always had tiny bumps on my upper arms that were just very annoying and my doctor told me to use and good gentle exfoliant for the body and a good moisturizer. I decided to try the Nude exfoliating scrub. It changed my shaving process forever. My Keratosis Pilaris is actually so much better ever since I introduced this in my routine. The scrub is the best to prevent ingrown hair and it suits my sensitive skin very well. It leaves your skin so soft it’s like brand new skin. I would recommend it and it lasts a very long time because the smallest amount can go a long way! If you have these annoying tiny bumps anywhere on your body you should for sure try it!!🤩"
